Hoppes Cantina gets raving reviews for several menu highlights. The fried tamales stand out, offering a unique twist that surprises first-time visitors. The carne asada is a favorite, praised for its juiciness and rich flavor, consistently cooked to perfection.
The birria tacos are another must-try, filled with tender meat and served with a savory broth for dipping. Diners appreciate the fresh salsa that adds a delightful kick to the meals. Also, the drinks—especially the Micheladas—are known for being refreshing and well-balanced, making them excellent accompaniment options. The daily lunch specials and great beer selection make this place not only a culinary delight but a great value too.
Most Disliked
Despite the overall positive experience, diners occasionally mention the unpredictable wait times during peak hours, especially when the restaurant is busy. Some guests note that the limited staffing can lead to a slight delay in service, although the staff remains friendly and eager to help.
A few diners expressed mild disappointment with the spice levels of certain dishes, wishing for a more pronounced flavor in some instances. Additionally, while the atmosphere is cozy, some patrons mentioned that it can feel crowded during busy times, impacting the overall experience.
It seems that the relatively small size of the venue could be a drawback for large groups, as reservations may not always be available during peak times.

Walking into Hoppes Cantina on Easter morning around 10:30am, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The place was completely empty, which can go either way but any doubts were immediately put to rest thanks to Jazmin, the bartender, who greeted us with a genuine smile and effortless charm. She was not only friendly, but also a great conversationalist who set the tone for what turned out to be a fantastic meal. We started off with something I’d never had before: fried tamales. Yes, you read that right…hot, crispy tamales that were crunchy on the outside while still soft and savory inside. Unique, and absolutely delicious. After reading rave reviews about the carne asada, I couldn’t resist and I’m so glad I didn’t. The steak was perfectly juicy, rich with flavor, and clearly cooked with care. Paired with charro beans that had a delightful jalapeño kick, it was a seriously satisfying plate. Their salsa brought a nice spice to the table too fresh, flavorful, and balanced. My husband ordered the birria tacos, and they did not disappoint either. They were tender, flavorful, and came with just the right amount of melty cheese and savory broth for dipping. Absolutely worth coming back for. To top it all off, we split a plate of sopapillas, which came out as a massive portion and dusted with just the right amount of sugar and cinnamon. The sides of chocolate and strawberry dipping sauces were a fun, indulgent bonus. On the drinks side, Jazmin made me a killer Michelada, well-balanced, refreshing, and one of the better ones I’ve had in a while. They also had a great beer selection on tap, including some fun local brews. The Ghost in the Machine was fantastic. Even though the place was empty when we arrived, it quickly became clear that Hoppes Cantina is a total hidden gem. The food? Top notch. The vibe? Laid-back, friendly, and full of personality. If you're looking for bold flavors and warm service, don't pass this place up. We’ll definitely be back.

This is the place to go if you’re looking for authentic Mexican food in Galveston! The meat in the food was fresh, tender, the flavor was phenomenal. The service was fast and friendly! There was only one waitress/bartender on the floor and she was friendly and got to every table quickly. Probably the best quesadilla and gordita we’ve ever had! The atmosphere is beautiful and fun too!

We went around lunchtime and it was surprisingly there was only 1 other table occupied. So the food came out fast and was very good. Prices were relatively good. They have a special every day of the week for lunch also. They have a very exquisite bar
